Nonprofit Cup Maker Buys North Flannery Facility
The Lighthouse for the blind that is a New Orleans based nonprofit that provides work for people who cannot see. It purchased the old Fantec plant on the North Flannery Road for $1.6 million in a deal that closed yesterday. The president of the Lighthouse for the Blind says the plan is to move equipment from Mississippi into the facility and start manufacturing paper towels and paper cups. Lighthouse sells paper products to the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. General Services Administration that are used in federal office buildings and military bases. The company had a facility in New Orleans, but it was forced to move to Crystal Springs, Miss., after Hurricane Katrina.

Busy Hurricane Season For 2011
The 2011 Atlantic hurricane forecast calls for 17 tropical storms, with nine becoming hurricanes. The Meteorologists at Colorado State University have reported that five of the hurricanes will be major, of category 3 or higher, according to Reuters. The forecast compares to the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season, which had 19 tropical storms, 12 hurricanes and five major storms. Forecasters say sea surface temperatures in the North Atlantic are still at record warm levels, indicating the region is in a multi-decade period of high storm activity. The Meteorologists say that the hurricane season for 2011 will be one of the strongest they had in a long time.

Weekend events offer parade, bonfires, craft

Christmas just isn't the same without a Christmas parade in Louisiana. Baton Rouge has dozens of brightly-colored floats and fire trucks making their way down the streets. The parade every year starts at 5:30 p.m on River Road, in the front of the river center. Also from 3-6 p.m. Sunday families can join staff members at Magnolia Mound as the celebrate a traditional Creole-French Christmas. All of the fun includes traditional games and French and Spanish music. The music is performed by Baton Rouge's South Boulevard Elementary Foreign Language Immersion Magnet. The dancing will be done by the Louisiana Vintage Dancers and the demonstrations of traditional skills such as weaving, cooking, and soap and basket making. A huge bonfire will be the ending of the evening of traditional holiday pastimes.

New York Times Best Sellers

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid
I chose this book because it is number one on the best selling Children's Series List in the NY times. These books are in a series that has five books in all. Jeff Kinney is the author and illustrator of all of the books in the series. These books are the trail in adolescence, in cartoons. The website says that these books are for ages nine to twelve, but I'm almost thirteen and I love to read them. Every book in the series is exactly two hundred and twenty-four pages long.

The book is about a kid going to middle school with only one friend and a few problems. The kid's name is Greg and his best friend's name is Rowley. They do everything together, but they are considered as the weird kids in school. They have bullies and Greg has an older brother, like normal middle school students. The first book is about Greg's friendship with Rowley and the horrible piece of cheese on the playground. The second book is about Greg, his older brother, Rodrick,  and the talent show at their school. The third book is about Greg's father with the soccer team and the Spag Union. The fourth and fifth books are about Greg's summer vacation and the pressure of growing up.

In conclusion, all of the books in the series are great. I have not read all of them yet, but I intend to finish all of them. All of the books are basically about Greg's life with troubles, disagreements, and growing. I would absolutely recommend this book series to any kid looking for a book. I love this series and I hope everyone likes it too.

Midwest Weather Conditions Freeze

A powerful storm hit Chicago and  left behind dangerously cold temperatures and started new challenges for workers. The storm this weekend closed many highways in many states. The storm canceled more than 1,600 flights and collapsed the Minnesota Vikings' Stadium. At least six weather-related deaths were recorded and nearly two feet of snow fell in five different states. Those states included Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan that had nearly two feet pf snow.

The storm is heading east towards Canada according to the National Weather Service. The plunging winds and dangerous temperatures are making the clearing of roads very difficult. The meteorologists say that worst part of the storm is pretty much over in most places. In Minneapolis, the inflatable roof of the Metrodome collapsed Sunday due to the storm. When the roof collapsed, half of the playing field was piled with snow of massive amounts.

A lot of road and air wrecks were reported during the storm due to the weather. At O'Hare International Airport nearly 1,375 flights were canceled because of the weather and flight conditions. A lot of major travel highways were closed because of the snow. A lot of people have died due to road wrecks and out-of-control cars. A lot of vehicles have crashed into trees or into poles on the slippery roads. In conclusion, these severe weather conditions can kill people and destroy places.

Christmas Traditions
Every year families around the world people celebrate Christmas in their own special way. Some families like to spend the days before Christmas decorating the Christmas tree together and baking Christmas cookies as a family. Other families go to midnight Church service and have children in Christmas pageants and plays. Some families bake Jesus a Birthday cake and sing Happy Birthday to Him. Other families have a tradition of opening one present on Christmas eve and the rest on Christmas morning. They even read Twas The Night Before Christmas before they go to bed.  Some families stay up all night waiting for Santa Claus drinking eggnog and having a good time.

Santa Claus

Kids believe in Santa Claus because they are told about him from an early age. It is like kids believing in the tooth fairy or the Easter bunny. These things are all done in good fun and to add to the festiveness of the holidays that they represent. However, the real story of Christmas should be taught as well. Often kids put Santa higher on their lists than Jesus.  Some mother thinks Santa Claus is an essential part of Christmas and that her daughter should believe as long as possible.

At Army camps around the nation the mess is starting to look a lot different from what it used to look like. Whole grains are being substituted for white bread as well as juice and milk dispensers are replacing soda fountains. Color- coded labels lead the way to healthier items and drill sergeants stand to watch over the chow line. Many new soldiers have never thought of keeping a diet plan but now the camp has one for them. The sergeants have found less injuries and higher score on the men's physical fitness tests.

4) BP Oil Disaster Was Avoidable
Staff members for the National Oil Spill Commission today found out that the BP disaster was avoidable. If the company and its contractors deployed better management and simply communicated with each other about potential risks that it would continue to be. Working in isolation deprived the partners of having all the information they needed to make key decisions prior to the rig explosion on April 20. Among the communication failures was the failure to disclose to all three companies working on the Macondo well disturbing pressure readings before the blowout. As well as disclosing the news about the problems with the cementing job.

Blog #46 / The Chicago Sun Times

                                  THE CHICAGO SUN TIMES

1) Coat Brings as Much Joy as a Toy

Over the past decade, Luther Burbank Elementary School special education teacher’s aide and Letters to Santa program coordinator Mary Ann Cech says she has seen a wide range of letters to dear old Santa Claus, but one thing remains constant. The children are just as interested in the practical gifts like the boots, coats, gloves, and socks as much as the toys. Many of them come to school in the middle of winter just wearing sweaters, because they do not own a warm coat. In one letter, a young Luther Burbank Elementary School student asked Santa about his elves, and whether they are up to any new toy making this year. A lot of the kid's favorite toys are the Bratz dolls and Lego's this holiday season in Burbank.

2) Teens Adrift 50 Days

Three teenager survived fifty days adrift on a small boat by drinking rainwater and eating raw fish and a seagull. They were in Wellington, New Zealand when a passing fisherman rescued them. The trio, Samuel Pelesa and Filo Filo, both 15, and Edward Nasau, 14, had been given up for dead on their coral atoll in the Tokelau islands, where a memorial service was held for them. They are still alive today very healthy with that memory in their minds forever.
3) Rat Killer Says Friends Envy His Job
In a never-ending battle against vermin, Mumbai employs 44 rat killers who hunt the creatures down at night and beat them to death with sticks in India. Rat killers make about $271 a month; an entry-level call center worker gets $338. The competition for rat-catcher jobs in Mumbai is stiff. Only men 18 to 30 may apply, and they must be able to lift a 110-pound sack and run a few miles. They also have to catch and kill a rat in the dark in 10 minutes. Each rat catcher must kill 30 rats a night, six nights a week or he doesn't get paid. The last time the city recruited rat killers, more than 4,000 people applied and some had university degrees.
 4) Willam and Kate Set a Date

The young Prince William of London has finally proposed and the couple has set a date for April 29, 2011. The young couple on Tuesday rejected the notion that austere times will force them to pare down the royal festivities. The church itself is free, at least.

5) Christmas Gifts For Travelers

Like a lot of travelers, Simon Duvall would love nothing better than for Santa to bring him an iPad this Christmas. It has has a bigger screen than an iPhone does and it is perfect for watching a movie on a plane. Diapers probably don’t make the most festive gift, but for parents juggling lots of space-hogging baby-related items, here’s something that might make trips with infants a tad easier: Diaper Buds, individually wrapped, vacuum-packed disposable baby diapers. The designer says they are 70 percent smaller than regular diapers and can even fit in a pocket, but they open into a full-size diaper. Find them at diaperbuds.com (eight for $6, 24 for $18).
William and Kate ended days of suspense by choosing the abbey, a grand venue where members of the House of Windsor have been crowned, married, mourned and buried. The abbey was also the site of the funeral for William's beloved mother, Princess Diana.
Palace officials said the two were on with their wedding choice and wanted the nation to share their joy.

Blog #45 / The LA Times

                               The LA Times

1) Disney's Rich Ross is Really Crazy

Rich Ross thinks that because of Pixar's new movie, 'Toy Story 3,' Pixar should get the Oscar for the best picture. The movie has prophet-ed over $1 billion in Movie Theater appearances and DVDs. Most people have told Ross that he is wasting the studio's money trying to hard for the win. They have done many things like link characters from the best picture win to other films. Ross should slow down and just accept that he might or might not win the Oscar for the greatest picture.

2) 'Tangled' beats 'Burlesque'

Disney Animation come back to the top with a princess who came down from a tower. "Tangled," the storied animation studio's six-years-in-the-making movie based on "Rapunzel," opened to a strong $69 million over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend. Box offices are selling more tickets for 'Tangled' than 'Burlesque, ' Faster,' 'Love and Other Drugs. 'Tangled' also enjoyed solid if not huge starts in a few foreign countries, particularly Russia, where it took in $7.5 million.

3) The Biz: Eye Wear Shoots for Style in 3-D

The movies in 3-D may be cool, but the glasses you get to watch them with are most certainly not. The Buddy Holly-like spectacles are not only clunky, but some moviegoers complain that the reusable glasses cause eye strain and question just how thoroughly they have been sanitized. Marchon3D, a division of Marchon Eye wear based in Melville, N.Y., has licensed its technology to Calvin Klein and Nautica for 3-D eye wear between $95 to $150. But the high-tech glasses, with a patented curved-lens design, are useful not just in theaters: They can be worn outdoors as regular sunglasses.Apart from being more stylish, these premium glasses vastly improve the 3-D viewing experience, manufacturers claim, because they're lighter, more comfortable and employ advanced optics to filter out reflections and other distractions that can cause eye strain.

4) Epic Mickey: Disney looks for bright future in a dark realm

Epic Mickey is the new video game from Disney for the Wii game system. The happiest place on Earth has a doppelganger. It’s called Wasteland. Its denizens are forgotten, dejected and resentful. But they’re not seething with rage. This is after all still a Walt Disney Co. property, even if its moniker is a topsy turvy twist on the Disneyland theme park where no one really dies and fairy princesses always prevail. It helps that Spector is a devoted Disney fan. During a company-sponsored tour for journalists of Walt Disney’s private apartment at Disneyland two weeks ago, his eyes welled up as he blurted, “I’ve modeled my whole life after two people, David O. Selznick and Walt Disney.”

5) Robot trained to care for the elderly at University of Connecticut

At the University of Connecticut, a robot named Nao is learning how to take care of elderly patientsThe toddler-sized machine is being programmed to determine how often it should remind its charges to take their medication, when to notify an overseer and when to just let the patients enjoy some autonomy. Nao, a sleek creature with glowing eyes, represents a combination of basic ethical principles, machine learning techniques, and artificial intelligence science. It looks partly cute and partly creepy, walking in lolling steps and speaking in its mechanical voice: "It is time to take your medication."

4) Obama Receives 12 Stitches to Lip
Obama received twelve stitches to his lip and treated at the White House doctor's office. He was at a basketball game and got elbowed in the lip by an opposing player in the lip. He was photographed in a grey T-shirt and jogging bottoms leaving the basketball facility, holding his bottom lip. A few hours later, reporters who had gathered on the White House driveway for the arrival of the Christmas Tree saw the president in an upstairs window, pressing what appeared to be a cold compress against his mouth. The president has been a long time player of the sport, and has even been seen to take to the court with Cabinet members.

3 Stories That Interest Me the Most

1) Advice Columns
Advice Columns can benefit not just the students, but the teachers as well. Advice can be about anything or anyone. Advice can be about what do to on on a weekend, what do to when in a struggle with God, or what do if you get a bad grade. Many people have different advice needs. I could brake those needs and give advice to many people.

First, I could give advice on what to do during a weekend. I know that could give people a lot of ideas for this one. They could read a good book snuggled under the covers or something like that. They could watch a good movie with their family members with popcorn. They could make things for elder neighbors or something.

Second, I could give advice on what to do when in a struggle with God. I could give them references to a church or people who could help. I could just give them scripture or encouraging words. I would do anything to lift some one's spirit about God to help them get to heaven. I could also schedule a meeting to discuss God and invite other people to make them feel comfortable.

Third, I could give ideas on what to do when you get a bad grade. I could give good study tips or advice about who to study with. I would tell them to just try harder next test. I would say that they could ask their parents to look it over with them. I could give great advice to whomever needs it about grades.

2) Restaurant Reviews
I could give great reviews on restaurants around the area that can be great for weddings, just nights with parents, or birthdays. I know everyone wants to go somewhere special for an event. I know love going out to eat for a wedding, birthdaynjust because. My family and I always go out to eat for special events. I would love going to restaurants to review them for special events.

First, I could do reviews for weddings. I could review caterers for a wedding to make sure a happy couple has a good wedding. I know I would want someone to review a caterer for my wedding. The day will be ruined if no one reviews a caterer and the couple has bad food. It would benefit everyone to have a caterer interviewed.

Second, some parents just don't want to cook and go eat out with their kids. I know if my family went out to eat, I would want to know about the food. Everybody wants to know what a restaurant has before they go to it. I really will review some restaurants in order to making some night special. I love to help people, and I know the people love when I help them.

Third, I can help review restaurants for people's birthdays. I know on my birthday, I would want to eat at the best restaurant. I love to help any one's birthday more special. The worst that could happen is the whole family goes to eat and everything, but when they get their food they are disgusted. I know for my birthday I would not want that to happen to me.

3) Trivia
I could give a trivia on many things to give the readers something to do. A newspaper is pretty boring with just boring articles. I know if the reader has something to do it keeps them interested in reading. Trivia can be about school, sports, or Bible stories. I know I enjoy a newspaper with trivia.

First, the trivia could be about school. I know if I were a principal I would want my students to be tested if they know about the school. It would be cool to have fun in school while learning about the school. It could be funny especially if a student says a totally bogus answer to a school question. I know teachers would get a kick out of this trivia as well as students.

Second, the trivia could be about sports. I know if I was a boy; I would want something that I would be interested in. Boys would love having something in the newspaper that is about sports. I could ask in the trivia like which team won the super bowl in ___ year, and things like that. Boys love when especially almost all girls are working on a newspaper, but still put boy-related stuff in it.

Third, the trivia could be about Bible stories. I know a Christian school would want their students being tested about God. Bible stories can be hard or easy. This trivia would bring a challenge to students from the newspaper. I know my classmates that ride my bus get a kick out of trying to answer the questions in the trivia.

Blog assignment #39/ 5 Fav. Hobbies

My 5 Favorite Hobbies

1) Drawing
I love drawing because when I'm bored I just sit down and begin drawing what I feel. I always draw in the car when I'm bored just to get my mind off of things. I have gotten many compliments on my artwork in the past and I am presently getting complimented on it. I also love to paint for the same reasons. I actually have people who have asked me to paint them something just to have in their office. I am known for my artwork by many people.

2) Volleyball
I love volleyball because I love the way I feel when I hit the ball in the air across the net to the other side. I love when I have tons of people on each team so the ball never touches the ground. I have never actually played on a team yet, but I am this year. I love when my sister is so competitive, but ends up always losing to other people. I love volleyball for many other reasons.

3) Reading
I love reading because I lose myself in a book. There was once a saying that says, "Outside of a dog a book is your best friend. Inside of a dog it is too dark to read." I love that saying because I read all sorts of series of books that keep my nose glued to the pages. I love reading when I am bored for many reasons.

4) Riding My Bike
I love my riding my bike because I love the way the wind in my ride blows my hair. When I ride my bike, I have so much clarity that my mind is completely empty. I have no care in the world when I ride my bike. I always ride my bike with my family during the summer. I love riding my bike when I can.

5) Cooking
I love cooking because when I cook  I make everything filled with love and compassion. I love going to the kitchen and just losing myself in a cake box. I love baking cakes and pastries all the time when I am bored. I love cooking for special events and birthdays. I love drawing, reading, riding my bike, volleyball and cooking.

Blog Assignment #38 / 5 Fav. Books

                        My 5 Favorite Books

1) The Vanishings
This Book is the first book in the "Left Behind: The Kids" series. This book is about four kids who face earth's last days together and get left behind in the Rapture while their families either died or vanished. The authors of this book is Jerry B. 2) Second Chance
This book is the second book in the "Left Behind: The Kids" series. This book is about four kids who seek salvation from the only pastor left behind in the Rapture. The kids deside to all live in one house together and try to find one of the four's uncle. This book's authors are also Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye. This book is where the four kids basically search for the truth.

Blog Assignment #35/ Weekend

My Fun-filled Weekend

My weekend was filled with fun, work, chores, and more fun. I consider weekends to be from Friday after school to Monday morning. Weekends are nothing, but a time away from school and school work. Although I was given homework for the weekend I still managed to have fun. I honestly don't know anyone who dislikes weekends at all.

Friday night, I went to my mom's friend's house to watch a movie and hang out while my parents went to a couple's meeting. We all watched the movie, "How to Train Your Dragon." It was funny because I had just watched that movie earlier in the day for my in-school-play-day at school. I had so much fun cooking homemade nachos all together. We then got bored and started searching for movies on movies-on-demand.

On Saturday, I slept late and finished my homework for the weekend. It was pretty boring doing all my chores until my mom told me to practice for my face painting job that I would do on Sunday. It was all fun after that especially when my mom asked if I wanted her to take me to the 99. My parents and I dropped off my sister at a friend's house and went to the 99. We were in line for an hour and a half, and were in the 99 for an hour. That was the best thing that happened all weekend.

On Sunday, I woke up early to get ready for church and my mom was already up filling the truck for the church's fall fest. When we got to church immediately we started setting up fro all the games. When church started all the ten to twelve year olds got groups of younger kids and the games began. I had four boys in my group, and they loved for me to be the goaly of their soccer game. Then all the older kids watched a drama that happened in church. Finally I finished the day face painting the day away.
