In 1983 Chris Wiggs created Polly for his daughter Kate with the idea of creating a toy tiny enough to fit into a pocket. Polly Pockets are toys that are small enough to fit in a pocket.
In the early 90's, Mattel had distribution arrangements with Bluebird to sell Polly Pocket and in 1998. Wiggs licensed the product through Bluebird Toys of Swindon, England and Polly Pocket first appeared in stores in 1989.Chris Wiggs wanted his daughter to have a toy that could fit in her pocket. Chris used a powder compact, he created a tiny house for the teensy doll. Polly Pocket is a 1990s toy line of miniature dolls and accessories. The name comes from the fact that many of the original Polly Pocket dolls came in pocket-size cases.
Mattel changed the look of Polly Pocket in 1999 and added a series of collectible items. The new Polly Pocket design is more realistic and slightly larger than the original. Soon after the new Polly, Mattel came out with Fashion Polly, which used the same characters from the new Polly Pocket (Polly, Lea, Shani, Lila, etc.), but they came in the form of 3 ¾ inch (9.5 cm) plastic jointed dolls. They gave a new spin on fashion dolls; instead of traditional cloth clothing, Polly Pockets used unique "Polly Stretch" garments, created by Genie Toys, rubbery plastic clothes that could be put on the dolls and removed.
Polly also has clip on clothes that are made of thin, hard plastic. They clip together using magnets embedded in the plastic. There are also some boy dolls (Rick, Steven, etc.) Like Barbie and Bratz dolls, they also star in Polly Pocket videos, books, and sites. A lot of people commented on the movies, books, and sites. Most of them said they were awesome. I personally have not seen all the movies and been to all the sites, but for the ones that I have seen and the sites that I have been to, I can say that Polly Pockets are very popular and were very popular back then. I know a lot of my family members love Polly Pockets and enjoy playing with them.
Polly Pocket dolls are tiny, plastic fashion figures with life-like facial features. Each can be dressed in a wide range of clothes and accessories to impress the others living in Polly ville. There are many different dolls to choose from and different settings to play with. Settings include Animal Wonderland, Babysitter Compacts, Compact Play sets, Enchanted Storybooks, Fun Fair, Fuzzy Friends, Happening Hair Series, Jewelled Compacts, Keepsake Series, Out 'n About Series, Pet Parade Series, Polly ville, Pony Parade Series, Pretty Me Series, Princess Treasures, Rings and Ring Cases, Sparkle Surprise, Totally Flowers and Vacation Fun. There are also many different accessories, characters and animals (such as horses) to choose from, in fact Polly's world is filled with so much stuff that she will never become boring to play with!
Many similarities can be seen between the new Polly and Mattel's Barbie. In 2001, Mattel released compact size Polly Pocket items; these are copies of the original items but are populated by the new Polly Pocket dolls. Between 1989 and 1998, there were more than 350 different Polly Pockets made, these tiny dolls and their accessories are now a popular collectors item. However since Polly is still available in stores today, she has not yet reached her peak collectible value. Polly has come a long way since her first home in a powder compact; toys such as the 'Totally Bead-iful Jewellery Maker' prove the popularity of the product and show her development over the years. She is no longer a tiny doll in a tiny house, she is a whole world of imagination that is increasing every year.
